By all historical accounts, Sugarloaf Mountain Lookout never existed. A USFS letter from 1941 shows funds appropriated for the lookout, but apparently these were later diverted to Thorodin Lookout, 9 miles to the south. What is intriguing is that Forest Service maps of the era, as well as past USGS topographic maps, show the existence of a tower, and a road was built to the top. There is no hard evidence uncovered as of yet that any fire detection structure, permanent or temporary, was ever contructed at this location.
