From York to the Allagash-Forest Fire Lookouts of Maine



My good friend Bill Spach from Virginia, Who has helped me research many Maine fire towers over the years. This pictures show him at Squaw Mt fire tower in 1967 when he was 9 years old! Thanks, Bill, for all those great photos that you took and that are shown in these pages!!

Abraham or Abram Mt. located in Mt.Abraham Township, in Franklin County at an elevation of 4049'
1st. tower erected in 1924 (20' steel tower)
2nd tower erected in 1936 (20' steel tower)
The steel tower still stands as of 1993 but the watchman's cab is gone

Agamenticus located in the town of York, in York County at an elevation of 692'-
1st tower erected in 1918 (20' steel tower) which stood on the eastern side of the mountain

The original tower was taken down and erected as a fire tower on Bear Mt. in Hartford,ME
The new tower (60' steel) remains active with volunteer fire lookouts since 1991 when closed by the state

Almanac Mt-located in Lakeville Plantation, in Penobscot County, elevation of 1052'
Originally erected in 1914 (48' steel tower)
moved to Dill Ridge in 1927 (a mountain next to Almanac)
moved back to Almanac as the landowners of Dill Ridge would not re-new the land lease
still standing in the 1990's
Almanac Fire Tower 1998 and in the process of being taken over by the locals to be preserved!

Ararat-located behind the Mt.Ararat High School in Topsham, in Sagadahoc County, elevation of 205'
Erected in 1933 (50' steel tower) and still standing in fine shape in 1998

Atherton Hill-located in Windham off the Nash Rd, in Cumberland County, elevation of 580"
Erected in 1949 (60' steel tower) originally this tower was at Blackstrap Hill in Falmouth,
it was taken down in 1999

Attean Mt-located in Attean Township (near Jackman) in Somerset County, elevation of 1905"
Erected in 1905 (wooden tower) it is no longer standing. Also conflicting reports say this may be the
same as Sally Mt tower which is located nearby, however can not confirm this.

Aziscoos Mt-located in Lincoln Plantation, in Oxford County, elevation of 3215'

Used by the U.S.Fish & Wildlife as an auxillary tower for fire detection. Wooden tower now fallen on site-1998

Barren Mt-located in Elliotsville Plantation, in Piscataquis County, elevation of 2868'
Erected in 1951 (27' steel tower, using the old Pleasant Pond Mt. fire tower) when the landowner of nearby Boarstone Mt would not re-sign the land lease
The tower is still standing in 1998 but is in bad shape and in danger of removal.
Barren Mt. Fire Tower

Bear Mt.-located in Hartford near the Turner town line, in Oxford County, elevation of 1207'
Erected in 1934 from the old tower, which stood on Agamenticus in York.
This tower was taken out of service in the early 1950's when the new tower was built on Streaked Mt. in nearby Buckfield.
