"The important mission to protect our nation’s fire lookout towers is about to receive the national publicity it deserves. But we need your help immediately! HistoriCorps, an organization dedicated to restoring threatened structures on public lands — including a large number of fire lookouts — is in its final week of a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign http://kck.st/2r0vuI6 to raise funds to launch their SAVING PLACES® documentary television series. Their goal is to raise $75,000 by June 11, but they need out help.
The Forest Fire Lookout Assoc. has agreed to help spread the word to fire tower aficionados across the country, and asks that folks make a pledge of $50 (or more!) to help support this important documentary.

8/15/2016 - Big Squaw Mountain (ME) Tower Dedication
As a part of Forest Heritage Days in Greenville, the Big Squaw Mountain fire tower was dedicated on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 9AM at the Greenville Visitors Center. The ceremony opened with NREC President Tim Obrey discussing NREC and how the project got where it did. FFLA Maine Chapter Director Bill Cobb then spoke about Maine's lookout history and Big Squaw Mountain history. Tim Obrey then closed the ceremony and the tower was opened to the public.
The Natural Resource Education Center (NREC) based in Greenville Maine, began a project to re-locate the Big Squaw Mountain fire tower to the Greenville Visitors Center back in 2011. In the fall of 2011, the Maine Forest Service disassembled the tower and flew it off the mountain for later delivery to the Department of Corrections where the 1919 steel was restored and a cab replica built. The replica cab was built to the original 1958 specs. MaineDOT transported both back to the visitors center in 2015 where it was assembled and erected. The Maine Chapter of FFLA was involved every step of the way, from planning, providing grant money, to interior construction, assembly, and decoration. The items in the cab were selected to represent a circa 1960 representation of the lookout. It's intention is to provide public access to a fire tower experience as well as a rich and hands-on understanding of Maine's fire detection history.

Today, July 16, 2016, we are gathered at Sand Mountain to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Sand Mountain Lookout reconstruction and the extraordinary work of the Sand Mountain Society. Today is also the 25th Anniversary of the National Historic Lookout Register.
We also celebrate the memory and good works of Doug Newman of Eugene, an extraordinary man who was deeply involved in both. It was 34 years ago that newspaper stories about lookouts by Doug Newman reached Washington D.C. I discovered that we both had a deep appreciation for fire lookouts and cared about their future.
In 1983 I came to Eugene to meet Doug and so began six years of collaborating over how each of us—working from opposite ends of the country--could join to awake a nation to the importance of fire lookouts in our American Heritage. He used say: “He had the brains, and I had the connections.”
The National Historic Lookout Register, patterned after the National Register of Historic Sites, was the result of that joint effort. . In 1990 we were ready to launch the NHLR, on the 25th Anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which had established the federal register of historic sites.
Doug chose to have the dedication of the NHLR at this spot 25 years ago, and Sand Mountain was the first lookout to be registered. Today there are 1137 lookouts listed on the NHLR www.nhlr.org, and an additional 3000 former lookouts are listed on the newer sister register: Former Fire LookOut Sites: www.fflos.com. Both registers are co-sponsored by the nationwide Forest Fire Lookout Association.
Some of you here today were here 25 years ago. We give thanks for the foresight of people like Don Allen and Doug Newman……and share our resolve that the proud history and importance of fire lookouts is not lost to our Nation’s Heritage.

In 1990, I shot and produced a feature story on fire towers for WCVB-TV Boston’s Chronicle program. It turned out it was the last season for Maine lookouts. I got to meet and interview the legendary Austin Wilkins and I found out that Henry Isenberg was looking to form a national group to preserve lookout history. The story is a glimpse back in time to very beginnings of the FFLA. I’m glad I had a chance to meet him and I hope this story helps to preserve his story. He was very passionate and worked very hard to make sure this history did not disappear.

We are saddened to pass along that FFLA's Henry Isenberg passed away on January 15. Henry was a founding member of FFLA and held numerous positions in the organization over the years. He was currently serving in the Southern New England Director and Answerman positions upon his passing. He will be greatly missed by all. We will have a more extensive write-up soon.

6/27/2015 - New Rental - Thorny Mountain Fire Tower (WV)
The fire tower at Seneca State Forest is known as The Thorny Mountain Fire Tower. It was constructed in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to provide better coverage of the Greenbrier River Valley. It is a steel tower standing at 53 feet with a 14'x14' living quarters. It is a unique tower for West Virginia.
The Thorny Mountain Fire Tower is patterned after western types that utilize the living quarters and catwalk on the platform. At 3445' feet above sea level, the Thorny Mountain tower is one of the highest standing towers in West Virginia today. There are 69 steps from the base up to the overnight quarters. It is located at latitude: 38.31306 : and longitude: 79.94611.
The view from the tower is spectacular. The 360 degree views are now possible due to clearing of mature trees that over the years blocked the view and created conditions that deteriorated the tower. Sunlight is also the current lighting source for the cabin interior instead of combustible type lighting. Combustibles of any type are not permitted in the tower cabin. The steps from the ground to the cabin were replaced with treated oak in the same size as the original wooden steps. The decking at the cabin was replaced with treated pine to lighten the weight of the structure. The cabin floor and structures inside the cabin are original – a tribute to the craftsmanship of the men of the Civilian Conservation Corps that constructed the tower in the mid-1930s.

For about 40 years, from when it was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s until the 1970s, Sheep Mountain Lookout was used by the Forest Service to spot wildfires in the Bighorn National Forest. At 9,600 feet in elevation, it is ideally situated to provide panoramic views of the national forest and beyond. These days, the lookout provides a different public service by offering visitors an opportunity to rent it overnight. On a clear day, visitors can see all the way to the Devil’s Tower formation at Devil’s Tower National Monument.

“The award recipients represent the diversity of efforts to preserve Oregon’s heritage,” said Kyle Jansson, coordinator for the Oregon Heritage Commission. “They also serve as models for others for how to make the most out of available resources.”

Artist in a Lookout named for Plumas National Forest Long-time Plumas County resident and artist Sally Yost will spend two weeks living and painting at Black Mountain Lookout, a Forest Service facility on the Plumas National Forest. One of Yost’s paintings from her residency will remain with the forest and will be used as the basis for an interpretive panel. Yost will also host a public painting workshop that will focus on painting in natural light.

Obama Administration Announces Support for DelBene/Larsen Legislation to Protect Green Mountain Lookout
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Obama Administration today announced it supports legislation to preserve the Green Mountain Lookout authored by Reps. Suzan DelBene and Rick Larsen. The Green Mountain Lookout Heritage Protection Act would protect the lookout in Glacier Peak Wilderness that a U.S. District Court ordered removed following a lawsuit.
In a Statement of Administration Policy, the White House wrote, “The Administration supports provisions that would allow for the operation of the Green Mountain Lookout in Washington State.”
“We appreciate the administration’s support for our commonsense bill to keep the Green Mountain Lookout where it belongs,” DelBene and Larsen said. “The Lookout is an iconic piece of the Pacific Northwest’s history and it deserves to be protected for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy today and in the years to come.”
The DelBene/Larsen bill to protect the lookout is included in a package of controversial public lands bills put up for a vote this week by House Republican leadership. The Obama Administration and numerous environmental groups oppose the package, which the administration says, “contains a number of provisions that would undermine the responsible balance of interests and considerations in the stewardship of the Nation’s lands and natural resources.” Both DelBene and Larsen will oppose the omnibus legislation as currently drafted and are calling instead for a clean, individual vote on their Green Mountain Lookout bill.
The House Committee on Natural Resources has approved the Green Mountain Lookout Heritage Protection Act. Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell have introduced companion legislation in the Senate where it awaits action.

12/20/2013 - Green Mountain LO (WA) - Bill Clears Committee
The committee also passed S. 404, a bill by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) to exempt a historic lookout cabin from wilderness restrictions in Washington state. Murkowski added an amendment to protect a cabin built in wilderness in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska."

HIGH POINT LOOKOUT STATION (Cleveland National Forest)
In-service May 11 - Dec 6; Operated 100% of the time except for five days due to severe weather. Staffed with 19 veterans and 57 new volunteers. Reported 42 smokes and 169 lightning strikes. Several of the smokes were first-reports. Several of the downstrikes developed into wildfires. 867 persons visited this remote site.

In-service May 18 - Dec 6. Due to some logistical challenges in getting our volunteers approved by a new system, we were only able to staff 40% with 6 veterans and 6 new volunteers. Reported 15 smokes and 19 lightning strikes. Recorded 3073 visitors to the site, most climbing up to the cab.
We feel that we have successfully navigated the logistical challenges we had with State Parks, and we are hopeful that we will be able to partner with them and staff this lookout 100% next season.

12/5/2013 - Maine Lookout celebrates 100th birthday

On November 15, Ed Werler celebrated his 100th birthday! Ed was the watchman on Deasey Mountain from 1947 - 1949, worked as a ranger in Baxter State Park till 1960, was Park Manager at Two Lights State Park till 1968, and finally ending his career as a Southern District Park Supervisor retiring in 1982. Shown here seated, Ed is being presented with a photo of the recently painted Deasey Mountain lookout by Maine IAT Chapter Board member Dick Anderson. A crew was led to the Cuyama Peak lookout site yesterday for a microtrash clean-up project. Weather was socked-in for most of the morning, but cleared up just as we were heading out. Amazing views!

9/17/2013 - Mebee Pass Lookout (WA) Update
By helicopter and afoot, our ten-person team and supplies arrived at the Mebee lookout on Friday, September 13, and worked tirelessly until late morning on Sunday, September 15, to stabilize and restore the structure. The team consisted of Mike Liu (district ranger at the USFS Methow Valley Ranger District, Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest), Dave Tucker, Dave Adams, RJ Van Liere, Doug McKeever, Ed Kenney, Dave Creeden, Don Goodman, Karl Kaiyala, and myself. Andy Zitkovich (North Cascades National Park) saw us and our external helicopter loads safely off the ground at East Creek, with Tony Reese from Hi Line Helicopters as pilot. All in all, the best of the best, basically. I'll send out a more complete report later as I work through my photographs, but here are five that I've posted this morning. But first, I'll thank the talented, dedicated, & highly motivated team, who worked so hard to produce a great result; and also all you who have supported this project in such a generous manner. And in particular, I want to thank
the folks at the US Forest Service, at the district, forest, and regional level, because without their support, this work would never have happened. Dave Tucker and I spent the night inside the lookout on Saturday, with the restless wind of changing weather rushing past outside. The old shutter hinges were faintly creaking and bumping against the eaves all night long, and I truly felt that the old lookout was telling us of its history, as well as its future, with those sounds. All in all, a marvelous experience and a great team
effort.

9/8/2013 - Berry Hill Fire Tower at Night and Catskill Fire Towers aglow
Like huge fireflies dotting the Forest Preserve, the Catskill fire towers will be lit up at 9:00 PM on Saturday, August 31 for approximately 30 minutes (Raindate-Sunday, September 1). The fire towers that remain from the original pattern are roughly nine miles apart on some of the highest Catskill peaks: Overlook, Mt. Tremper, Hunter, Utsayantha, Balsam Lake, and Red Hill.
In honor of Fred Lamb, we are lighting the cab of the Berry Hill Fire Tower at the same time the Catskill Towers are being lit. Fred passed away last year, he was our director for the renovations we are doing at Berry Hill.
We lucked out last night, the storms by passed us at Berry Hill. What a wonderful evening and we are sure that Fred Lamb looked down with a smile on his face...
A special thank you to Andy at DEC for providing permission for this event to take place, and providing the keys to open the locks!

6/28/2013 - Squaw Mountain (CO) Fire Lookout grand opening
Kent Argow, director of the Colorado/Utah chapter of the FFLA, cut the ribbon for the Squaw Mountain Lookout to be added to the United Stations Forest Service rental system on Friday, June 28. The occasion was also the grand opening of the lookout following many years and
countless hours of volunteer, Colorado Forestry Association, and USFS work repairing and restoring the venerable tower. At 11,468 feet elevation, it's the highest liveable and functional lookout extant in the country and should be a jewel in the USFS recreational rental system.

Rock Lookout is also in the northern Blue Mountains in Washington, just a couple of miles north of the Oregon + Washington state line, about 20 miles east of Walla Walla, Washington. Table Rock sits on the western edge of the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness Area and the eastern edge of the Mill Creek Watershed, which provides water to the city of Walla Walla. Both are in the Umatilla Nat'l Forest, Walla Walla Ranger District. |

9/25/2012 - Leek Springs Fire Lookout's 100th birthday, CA
Help us celebrate 100 years of fire protection and detection on Sept. 29th, at 12 o'clock. Bring a lunch and enjoy the view and learn about the tower's history and check out the great pictures. Pictures will be on hand of the first lookout, which was a platform in a tree, through pictures from1944, when the tower was staffed during the winter to look for Japanese planes that the government thought were going to attack the US. Also pictures of other CA lookouts will be available.

Historic Fire Tower on White Mountain National Forest Gets Facelift
September of 2012, much needed restoration work was completed on the Kearsarge North Fire Tower on the White Mountain National Forest (New Hampshire). The Tower was built in 1949, replacing several earlier versions going back to 1909. A Nez Pierce National Forest (Idaho) employee experienced in historic structure renovation was the technical leader of the project, and worked with Saco Ranger District staff.
The renovations included an airlift of lumber, tools, and equipment; and replacement of the Tower’s legs, cabin girders, fascia boards, tower girders, cross bracing, and hardware. Forest visitors were educated about the project through a temporary interpretive sign. Contact: Dylan Alden 603.447-5448 or dalden@fs.fed.us.

7/16/2012 - Monjeau Lookout Burned, NM
The Monjeau Lookout on the Lincoln NF in New Mexico was partially burned in the Little Bear fire back in June. The cab was burned out but the apartment in the lower portion of the tower was not burned.
Monjeau was completely restored in 2006 including the replacement of the original windows (in the 1960s they were changed to full paned versions not historic), on this National Register listed fire lookout. Mark Gutzman (USDA Forest Service, Lincoln National Forest) is working towards having the cab restored prior to next year’s FFLA conference. The design of the rock structure may be the reason for the cab destruction. As there a breezeway beneath the cab, and where the ladder is located to access this 7’X7’ cab, the super-heated air blew through this area setting the floor of the cab on fire and it then burned upwards. The cab frame appears to still be in ok shape, but a bit more engineering investigation may be needed (especially for the floor “L” beams). The cabin below the breezeway has only miner cracks in two of its windows.

The observation platform on the new Fire Tower (look-alike) on Mount Blue Maine is now open.

Although the trail to the summit is now open, communication work is still underway and care should be taken if visiting as the site is still an active construction area. Pay close attention to any signage, taped off areas, or instructions by any site workers during this time.

Maine Forest Service: Forest Ranger Crew Leads Fire Tower Removal
AUGUSTA, Maine - A joint crew from the Maine Forest Service, under the Maine Department of Conservation, and the Army National Guard today moved an old fire tower from Norway Bluff for installation at the Ashland Logging Museum in Ashland. The crew worked close to eight hours, placing the 24-foot-tall, metal fire tower and its wooden cab, on Guard trucks for removal to the Garfield Road museum. The detail was organized and led by MFS Forest Ranger Amanda Barker, with help from MFS Forest Ranger Todd Weeks. It took two flatbed trucks to deliver the fire tower to the museum.
The 1136th Transportation Co. based out of Calais provided the vehicles and crew. The tower was lifted on to the trucks by an excavator provided M. Rafford Trucking Co. of Ashland. It was unloaded by a self-loader log truck provided by Robert Flint Trucking of Ashland. Malcolm Milligan, 13, of Ashland, Boy Scout Troop 179, will take on the restoration of the cab as an Eagle Scout project.
"We wanted to do this to remind the younger generation of the importancet of these fire towers in protecting our Maine forests," Barker said.
The Norway Fire Tower was in place on the bluff, located in Township 9, Range 9 WELS, since 1914. The Maine Forest Service, Protection Division, no longer uses fire towers for forest fire observation, but instead uses air patrol flights. The site will be used for the installation of a new state radio tower.

The Beltrami County Agricultural Association, manager of the Beltrami County Fairgrounds, announces the addition of a new building to be built this summer on the fairgrounds. Called the “Forestry Education Center” which will be located next to the Fire Tower.
Phase 1 was the moving of the Pinewood fire tower to the fairground in 2004 and Phase 2, the last, is to
build the "Forestry Education Center". This was made possible because of grants from the “George W. Neilson Foundation and the Legacy funds and private individual donations. Construction will begin this summer with an opening and a ribbon cutting ceremony date set for the 2013 fair.
The building will house a 1950’s Ranger Station, display’s from the Minnesota DNR, Forestry Division, Red Lake DNR, U.S. Forest Service and will be available for groups like the Master Gardener’s and other horticulture clubs. Other occupants we are making arrangements for is; DNR Fish & Wildlife and a “Wild Fire Prevention Display from the DNR.
It is our goal to have the building and fire tower open before and after the fair for as much of the summer as we can and make the facilities available for tour groups during the summer’s non fair days.
